I don't like to pace myself (or the church, my team, etc .) - when it comes to progress I want it now and never ending. I remember Andy Stanley, the pastor of Northpoint church, talking about how the pursuit of progress can cause us to compromise our priorities in life. I've experienced it in my own life. Mosaic is in a great season. We moved out of the AMC theater and are now in Mallard Creek High School (which btw is a kick a%## place) - this coming weekend will be our 5th Sunday there - so anyways, the point is that this move has opened up so many possibilities and so many things to do - I currently have the best lead team I could ask for. Our volunteers are jacked up! - BUT ....I know, I know that I can't wear myself and the team out right now - because its the summer. So we are pacing ourselves and getting ready for the fall season. The fall is critical for church growth and the fall is also critical for self growth (it is your one shot for hitting your personal goals before the year is out.) So if you are a leader in any capacity you might want to pace your progress. On the left is me pacing myself.
Permission is critical to leadership. Have you ever teased someone and experienced an awkward moment - its because you did not have permission to 'go there'. Have you ever meet someone and instantly felt like you knew each other for years. Have you known someone for years but you still feel uneasy around them. Its all about the amount of personal permission people have given us - permission lead, talk, correct, discuss, joke and question things about their life.
As a leader it is critical to GET permission from the people we lead. It is equally important to GIVE permission to the people who follow us.
